What is Imagen?

Imagen is a text-to-image AI system developed by the Google Research Brain Team. It generates photorealistic images from written descriptions. Its key design choice is to use a large, frozen T5-XXL language model, pretrained on text only, to encode the prompt into embeddings. A conditional diffusion model then turns those embeddings into a 64x64 image, and two text-conditional super-resolution diffusion models upscale it to 1024x1024.

The page presents Imagen mainly as a research project. It reports a COCO FID score of 7.27 without training on COCO, and it introduces DrawBench, a benchmark for testing compositionality, counting, spatial relations, rare words and long text. In side-by-side human evaluations, raters preferred Imagen over VQ-GAN+CLIP, Latent Diffusion Models and DALL-E 2. Users can try example prompts on the page, but the text does not describe a public app, a sign-up process or pricing.

Key features

  • Generates photorealistic images from text prompts
  • Uses a frozen T5-XXL text encoder for language understanding
  • Cascaded diffusion with 64x64 base and super-resolution up to 1024x1024
  • Strong text-image alignment, including counting and spatial relations
  • DrawBench benchmark for evaluating text-to-image models

Who is it for

  • Researchers in generative AI
  • Machine learning engineers
  • Developers following text-to-image research

Pros and cons

Pros
  • State-of-the-art COCO FID of 7.27 reported on the page
  • Human raters preferred its outputs over DALL-E 2 and other models in side-by-side tests
Cons
  • No public access, pricing or product page is described in the text
