What is Aider?
Aider is an open source command-line tool for AI pair programming. You run it in your terminal inside a project folder and connect it to an LLM such as Claude 3.7 Sonnet, DeepSeek, OpenAI o1, o3-mini or GPT-4o, or to a local model. It builds a map of your entire codebase so it can work across larger projects, and it supports more than 100 programming languages.
In practice you ask Aider for changes in plain language, and it edits the files directly. Each change is committed to git with a sensible commit message, so you can review the diff, manage or undo AI edits with familiar git tools. You can also add images and web pages for visual context, use voice to request features or fixes, and have Aider run linters and tests automatically to fix problems it detects. Aider can also be used from within your IDE by adding comments to code, or through a browser chat by copying code back and forth.
