What is TensorFlow Playground?
TensorFlow Playground is an educational visualization of a small neural network that runs entirely in the browser. You choose a dataset (a classification or regression problem), select input features, and configure the hidden layers, number of neurons, activation function, learning rate, regularization and batch size. Pressing play starts training, and the interface shows the decision boundary, the training and test loss, and the weights of each connection as colored lines.
The tool is meant for building intuition rather than production work. Colors show the data points, the neuron values and the weights, with orange for negative and blue for positive values. The page also explains the basic idea of neural networks, links to further reading, and states that the code is open source on GitHub under the Apache License. For real-world applications the site points to the full TensorFlow library.
Key features
- Choose datasets and problem type (classification or regression)
- Select input features to feed into the network
- Configure hidden layers, neurons, activation and regularization
- Adjust learning rate, batch size and training/test split
- Live visualization of decision boundary, loss and connection weights
- Open source code on GitHub under Apache License
Who is it for
- students learning machine learning
- teachers preparing neural network lessons
- developers new to neural networks
Pros and cons
- Runs in the browser with no setup needed
- Shows how training changes the network in real time
- Open source and free to reuse
- Built for education, not for real-world use
- Uses a small custom library rather than full TensorFlow
