What is NSynth Super?

NSynth Super is an experimental physical instrument built by Magenta, a Google research project, together with Google Creative Lab. It is based on NSynth (Neural Synthesizer), a deep neural network that learns the acoustic characteristics of sounds and synthesizes entirely new sounds from them, rather than simply layering or blending existing recordings.

In practice, the instrument gives musicians access to more than 100,000 sounds precomputed by NSynth from 16 original source sounds recorded in a studio across 15 pitches. Each of four dials is assigned four source sounds, and a touchscreen lets the player drag a finger to move through new sounds that mix the acoustic qualities of those sources. It can be played from any MIDI source such as a DAW, sequencer or keyboard, and includes envelope controls to refine the sound.

Key features

  • Generates over 100,000 new sounds with the NSynth neural network algorithm
  • Touchscreen interface for navigating between sounds
  • Four dials to select which source sounds to explore between
  • Envelope controls to refine sounds
  • Playable via any MIDI source such as a DAW, sequencer or keyboard
  • Open source hardware and software, including source code, schematics and design templates

Who is it for

  • musicians
  • sound designers
  • artists experimenting with machine learning
  • coders and researchers

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Creates sounds that would be difficult or impossible to produce with a hand-tuned synthesizer
  • Fully open source, with code and designs available on GitHub
Cons
  • Described as an experimental prototype shared with a small community of musicians, not a commercial product
