What is Magenta?
Magenta is an open source research project, originally started by Google, that studies how machine learning can be used in the creative process of making art and music. It is distributed as a Python library built on TensorFlow, with utilities for preparing music and image data, training models on that data, and generating new content. A JavaScript version, Magenta.js, runs pre-trained models in the browser using TensorFlow.js.
The project's current focus is music. Its newest model, Magenta RealTime 2, is an open-weights live music model and real-time neural synthesis engine for building AI musical instruments on a laptop. Other examples include Magenta Studio, a set of plugins for Ableton Live, the DDSP-VST plugin for morphing one instrument's sound into another in real time, and the Infinite Crate DAW plugin that uses the Lyria RealTime API. Demos such as Onsets and Frames (piano transcription) and MusicVAE (blending musical loops) show the kinds of tasks the models can handle.
